Axel Thue (Norwegian: [tʉː]; February 19, 1863 – March 7, 1922) was a Norwegian mathematician. He is known for his original work in diophantine approximation and combinatorics.

Work

In 1909, Thue wrote his first important paper. In 1914, he introduced the word problem for semigroups, also called the Thue problem, which is closely connected to the halting problem. His only known PhD student was Thoralf Skolem. A special type of programming language called Thue is named after him.
