George Carter was born on January 10, 1944, and passed away on November 18, 2020. He was an American professional basketball player who played in the American Basketball Association (ABA). He stood 6 feet 4 inches tall and played as a swingman, a player who could play both forward and guard positions.
High school career
Carter attended Silver Creek High School in New York and graduated in 1963. He was selected twice to the All-Western New York (WNY) basketball team. He also participated in high school football and track.
In 2009, The Buffalo News celebrated 50 years of All-Western New York (WNY) basketball selections. Carter, who was selected twice to the All-WNY first team, was chosen to the All-time All-WNY team as a second team member.
Professional career
Carter was chosen by the Detroit Pistons in the eighth round of the 1967 NBA draft. He was also chosen by the New Orleans Buccaneers in the 1967 ABA draft. In addition, he was selected by the MLB's New York Mets and the NFL's Buffalo Bills. Carter, Dave Winfield, and Mickey McCarty are the only three people known to have been chosen by four different professional leagues.
Carter played only one game for the Pistons and then joined the Washington Caps of the rival American Basketball Association. He played seven seasons in the ABA, spending time with eight teams: the Caps, the Virginia Squires, the Carolina Cougars, the Pittsburgh Condors, the New York Nets, the Memphis Sounds, the Baltimore Claws (preseason games only), and the Utah Stars. Carter represented the Squires in the 1971 ABA All-Star Game. He scored a total of 8,863 points in both the ABA and NBA.
