Hiromu Takahashi (高橋 広夢, Takahashi Hiromu; ring name: 高橋 ヒロム) was born on December 4, 1989. He is a Japanese professional wrestler who is best known for working with New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) for sixteen years.
Takahashi began his career with NJPW on August 28, 2010, and worked as a "Young Lion" for three years. In January 2014, he was renamed Kamaitachi (カマイタチ, Kamaitachi) and sent to the Mexican promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) to continue his training and gain international experience, a common practice for NJPW's "Young Lions." In January 2016, he won his first professional wrestling title, the CMLL World Lightweight Championship. After leaving CMLL, he worked for the American promotion Ring of Honor (ROH) until late 2016. He returned to NJPW in November 2016, using his real name again.
Since returning to NJPW, Takahashi has won five IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championships, one NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship with Yota Tsuji and Bushi, and has won the Best of the Super Juniors tournament four times (in 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022). He also made his acting debut in the Kamen Rider franchise, playing the characters Joseph Rando and Evol-X in the series.
Early life
Takahashi was born on December 4, 1989, in Hachiōji, a city in Tokyo. When he was 12 years old, he became a fan of professional wrestling, especially Masahiro Chono, who inspired Takahashi to work hard in school to become a member of the track and field team.
Professional wrestling career
Takahashi joined New Japan Pro-Wrestling's (NJPW) annual open tryout in May 2009. He passed the test and entered the NJPW Dojo, where he trained with King Fale and Kyosuke Mikami. All three wrestlers made their in-ring debut around the same time.
Takahashi was the last of the three NJPW Dojo class of 2010 to debut for NJPW on August 24, 2010, at the NEVER.1 show. Mikami defeated Takahashi in a short match. As part of his training, Takahashi followed NJPW traditions for rookies, called "Young Lions." He wore all-black trunks and boots and usually lost matches during his training. He lost every match he competed in until February 6, 2011, when he teamed up with Tomoaki Honma to defeat Fale and Mikami. Six months after his debut, Takahashi won his first singles match by defeating Kazuki Hirata of the Dramatic Dream Team (DDT) promotion at NEVER.5.
Later, Takahashi competed in the 2011 "Road to the Super Juniors" tournament but lost in the first round to Keisuke Ishii of DDT. On October 10, 2011, Takahashi and Mikami defeated King Fale and Takaaki Watanabe in a dark match at the Destruction '11 pay-per-view event. In 2012, Black Tiger was originally set to compete in the Best of the Super Juniors tournament but had to withdraw. Takahashi replaced him and lost most of his matches during the tournament, except against Taka Michinoku. He later teamed with Mikami and Takaaki Watanabe in the "J Sports Crown Openweight 6 Man Tag Tournament" but lost their first-round match.
On January 4, 2013, Takahashi wrestled in a dark match at Wrestle Kingdom 7, teaming with Jyushin Thunder Liger and Tiger Mask. They lost to Bushi, Kushida, and Ryusuke Taguchi. During the summer of 2013, Takahashi competed in the Best of the Super Juniors again but lost all his matches. He then traveled to the United Kingdom to wrestle for British independent promotions.
In August 2016, a mysterious video with a time bomb counting down to November 5, 2016, appeared on NJPW programming. On November 5, Takahashi made a surprise appearance after Kushida won the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, challenging Kushida to a match at Wrestle Kingdom 11. On December 10, Takahashi joined the Los Ingobernables de Japón (L.I.J.) stable after accepting an offer from Tetsuya Naito. He returned to NJPW on December 16, pinning Kushida in a tag team match with Naito.
On January 4, 2017, Takahashi defeated Kushida to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship for the first time. He defended the title against Dragon Lee on February 11 and Ryusuke Taguchi on March 6. He won again on April 9 by defeating Kushida and on April 29 by defeating Ricochet. Takahashi lost his first match since returning on May 17, when he was defeated by Dragon Lee in the 2017 Best of the Super Juniors tournament. He lost additional matches in the tournament and did not advance to the finals. On June 11, Kushida defeated Takahashi to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.
In late 2017, Takahashi regularly teamed with L.I.J. member Bushi in NJPW's junior tag team division. They defeated Dragon Lee and Titán in the 2017 Super Jr. Tag Tournament but were eliminated in the semifinals. At Wrestle Kingdom 12, Takahashi competed in a fatal-four-way match for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship but did not win. He also failed to win the Jr. Tag Team Championships. In 2018, Takahashi won the Best of the Super Juniors tournament, defeating Kushida in the finals. He won the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship again on June 4, 2018, after defeating Taiji Ishimori.
On July 7, 2018, Takahashi defended his title against Dragon Lee but suffered a broken neck during the match. He was expected to miss 9 to 12 months of wrestling. The title was declared vacant on August 20.
On November 3, 2019, Takahashi returned to NJPW, challenging Will Ospreay for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 14. His return match on December 19, 2019, ended with a loss to Ospreay and Robbie Eagles. On January 4, 2020, Takahashi defeated Ospreay to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship for the third time. He also helped Jushin Thunder Liger win his retirement match. He later lost the title to Ishimori after holding it for 238 days.
In June 2020, Takahashi entered the New Japan Cup for the first time. He defeated wrestlers like Toru Yano and Tomohiro Ishii to reach the semifinals, where he lost to Kazuchika Okada. He later won the Best of the Super Jr. tournament after defeating El Desperado in the finals. He then challenged El Phantasmo, the winner of the Super J-Cup, to a match at Wrestle Kingdom 15. Takahashi defeated Phantasmo and Taiji Ishimori, beginning his fourth reign with the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. However, he suffered a torn pectoral muscle and vacated the title on February 25, 2021. On July 25, 2021, Takahashi returned to wrestling at Wrestle Grand Slam in Tokyo Dome.
