Lynceus is a character from Greek mythology. He was a prince from Messenia and one of the Argonauts, a group of heroes who sailed with Jason on the ship Argo. His role on the Argo was to act as a lookout, helping to watch for dangers. Lynceus also took part in the Calydonian boar hunt, an important event in ancient stories. His name in Ancient Greek is Λυγκεύς, which is written as Lunkeús in the Roman alphabet. His name means "lynx-like" in English.
Family
Lynceus was a son of Aphareus and Arene, Polydora, or Laocoosa. He was the brother of Idas and Peisus.
Mythology
Lynceus, along with his brother Idas, killed Castor. He helped Idas find and kill Castor, and was later killed by Castor's brother, Pollux. Before dying, Lynceus hurt Pollux by throwing a rock. Idas and Lynceus killed Castor because Castor and Pollux had taken and married Phoebe and Hilaeira, the daughters of Leucippus. These daughters were supposed to marry Lynceus and Idas, or they might have been related to them.
Lynceus was known for having very sharp eyesight. Some stories say he could see through walls, trees, skin, and the ground. Other stories claim he could see in the dark. However, some people believed his ability to see through the ground was not real but instead came from his knowledge of geology and gold mining. This skill has been compared to the real-world technique of x-ray photography and to Superman's x-ray vision.
