Canyon Barry was born on January 7, 1994. He is an American professional basketball player who played for the Iowa Wolves in the NBA G League. He also plays basketball for the United States in FIBA 3×3 competitions. Canyon is the son of Lynn Norenberg Barry and Rick Barry, who is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.
College career
He played college basketball for three years at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina, and one year at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. As a junior in his third year at the College of Charleston, Barry scored an average of 19.7 points per game, which was the highest on his team. After that season, he graduated from the College of Charleston Honors College with a bachelor's degree in physics. On May 9, 2016, he announced he would transfer to the University of Florida as a graduate student who could play immediately. He was studying nuclear engineering at the time. After finishing college, he began working as a system engineer at L3Harris.
He is best known for his free-throw shooting. He uses a method called "granny style," which his father used during his own basketball career. As a senior, Barry made 88.3% of his free throws. He set a school record for the University of Florida's men's basketball team by making 42 free throws in a row, breaking the previous record of 37 held by Taurean Green. This streak ended on February 14, 2017, during a game against Auburn when he scored a season-high 30 points. In 2017, he was honored as an NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Academic All-American of the Year.
Professional career
After not being chosen in the 2017 NBA draft, Barry joined the New York Knicks in the NBA Summer League on June 23, 2017.
On August 16, 2017, Barry signed a contract with the Finnish club Salon Vilpas Vikings for the 2017–18 season.
On December 9, 2017, Barry signed with Brno, a team in the Czech National Basketball League (NBL).
On October 13, 2018, Barry signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves but was later released. He was then added to the Iowa Wolves' starting team for the season. During the 2020–21 season, Barry scored an average of 12.9 points and grabbed an average of 3.4 rebounds per game.
Barry participated in the 3×3 basketball tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
