Early life

Jørn Utzon was born on September 27, 1944, in Stockholm, Sweden. He grew up first in Hellebæk, a town near Helsingør in the northern part of Zealand, until his family moved to Australia in 1957. Utzon attended the School of Architecture in Sydney from 1964 to 1966 and later studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1966 to 1970.

Career

Jan Utzon was greatly influenced by his father's way of designing buildings. He began working with his father on important projects, such as the Kuwait National Assembly Building. In some projects, it is hard to know exactly who did what because Jan worked with his father and his brother, Kim. These projects include the Paustian House in Copenhagen and the Skagen Odde Nature Centre in northern Jutland. Jan also started his own design office on Funen, where he created many interesting buildings. One of his most successful projects is the Performing Arts Centre in Esbjerg (1997), which includes a theatre, concert hall, and museum. The large shared entrance area, which serves both the concert hall and museum, is especially admired and was built with a limited budget.

Utzon Architects and Johnson Pilton Walker, Architects worked together to find ways to improve the Opera Theatre at the Sydney Opera House.

Jan Utzon has also worked in developing countries. For example, he helped build the headquarters of the Humana People to People organization in Shamva, Zimbabwe, and a large training and conference centre in San Juan de las Pulgas near Ensenada, Mexico (2008).
