Film career
Karthik was introduced to Tamil cinema by Bharathiraja in the film Alaigal Oivathillai (1981). Bharathiraja gave him the stage name Karthik. In 1981, he received the Best New Face Award from the Tamil Nadu Government. That same year, he appeared in the Telugu version of Seethakoka Chilaka under the stage name Murali. He worked with many famous directors, including Mani Ratnam, Bharathiraja, Visu, R. Sundarrajan, Ameerjan, R. V. Udayakumar, Priyadarshan, Fazil, Vikraman, Agathiyan, Sundar C, K. S. Ravikumar, P. Vasu, and K. V. Anand.
In the early stages of his career, Karthik worked with R. V. Udayakumar three times. Later, he partnered with Goundamani in many comedy films. He was praised by Tamil audiences for his role in Nallavanukku Nallavan (1984), where he acted opposite Rajinikanth. During the early to mid-1980s, he appeared in several films, including Bhagavathipuram Railway Gate (1983), Pei Veedu (1984), and Raja Thanthiram (1984), which were low-budget films that did not gain much attention. His pairing with Radha in the 1980s was well-received. He received praise for his role in the Telugu thriller Anveshana by Vamsy and for his cameo in Mouna Ragam (1986).
After his strong performance in Mani Ratnam’s 1986 film Mouna Ragam, Karthik appeared in many performance-focused films. His 1987 film Vanna Kanavugal was a big hit and marked the start of his success as a serious actor. He impressed audiences with his calm and powerful acting style. He worked with many directors starting in 1987 and made several successful films. He acted in the Telugu film Abhinandana (1988), for which he won the Nandi Special Jury Award. He played strong roles in commercial films like Agni Natchathiram (1988), Varusham Padhinaaru (1989), Idhaya Thamarai (1990), Kizhakku Vaasal (1990), and Gopura Vasalile (1991).
During this time, Karthik took risks by choosing challenging scripts. His 1992 film Amaran was an action film where he played an orphan who becomes a don. The film did not do well at the box office, but one of its songs, Vethala Potta Sokkula, became very popular. Nadodi Thendral (1992), directed by Bharathiraja, and Ponnumani (1993), a village drama that was a big hit and earned Karthik his fourth Filmfare Award, were also notable. He spent time filming Maga Rayudu (1994), a Telugu film with Vijayashanti. Other films from this period included Marumagan (1995), Chakravarthy (1995), Nandhavana Theru (1995), and Thotta Chinungi (1995).
In 1996, Karthik appeared in Kizhakku Mugam. That same year, he had his biggest commercial success in Ullathai Allitha, a comedy directed by Sundar C, starring Rambha and Goundamani. He later worked with Sundar C again on Mettukudi. He received critical praise for his role in Gokulathil Seethai, which won a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for its portrayal of women. Although he did not win an award for his performance, he was praised for his ability to play a rough, carefree character and transition smoothly into a respectful role. He also appeared in Pistha (1997), directed by K. S. Ravikumar, which received good reviews. In 1998, he had box office success with Harichandra (1998), Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen (1998), and Pooveli (1998), and won a Tamil Nadu State Award for Best Actor for both Pooveli and Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen. In 1999, he appeared in dramas like Chinna Raja, Nilave Mugam Kaattu, Anandha Poongatre, Suyamvaram, and Rojavanam. He also starred in comedies, including Unakkaga Ellam Unakkaga (1999), a successful film directed by Sundar C. His pairing with Rambha was popular in the late 1990s.
In the early 2000s, Karthik faced challenges as his popularity declined and new actors emerged. Many family films he appeared in, such as Thai Poranthachu (2000), Sandhitha Velai (2000), Kannan Varuvaan (2000), Kuberan (2000), and Seenu (2000), did not gain much attention. Films like Kadhale Swasam (2000) with Meena, Kadhal Solla Vandhen (2000) with I. S. Sivan, and Maga Rayudu (1994) were not successful. He also appeared in Dev (2019) with actor Karthi and in Andhagan (2024), where he played a veteran actor with scenes from old movies, earning praise for his performance.
In 2011, he appeared in Puli Vesham directed by P. Vasu, and in 2013, in the Telugu film Om 3D. Both films did not do well at the box office. In 2014, he played the main antagonist in Anegan, directed by K. V. Anand, alongside Dhanush.
Political career
Karthik entered politics before the 2006 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election. He joined the All India Forward Bloc and became the Secretary of the Tamil Nadu state unit of the party. He led the party’s campaign on September 24, 2006. In 2009, before the Lok Sabha elections, he founded his own party, Ahila India Naadalum Makkal Katchi. He ran for office in the Virudhunagar constituency and received 15,000 votes. In 2018, before the Lok Sabha elections, he created another party, Manitha Urimaigal Kaakkum Katchi, in Tirunelveli. He expressed support for the AIADMK alliance.
Karthik’s party attempted to form an alliance with AIADMK for the 2011 Assembly elections. However, the leader of AIADMK refused to give his party election tickets. Karthik announced that his party would run independently in 25 to 40 constituencies after being excluded from the AIADMK coalition. He staged a fast in Madurai to demand that the Madurai Airport be renamed Pasumpon Thevar Airport. His party, which has strong support from Thevar voters in southern Tamil Nadu, is believed to take votes away from AIADMK. In 2006, former AIADMK minister Nainar Nagendran lost the Tirunelveli constituency by 2,000 votes. Karthik’s party received more votes than the margin of defeat in that area. Two weeks later, Karthik left AIADMK and declared that his party would run independently in 19 constituencies while supporting the DMK in 213 constituencies.
